Timex Men's Easy Reader Day-Date Expansion Band Watch

The light is always with you, to see obstacles in the dark.
This a great watch for anyone, but maybe especially for old folks like me (86). I love to be reminded of the day of the week and the day of the month, just in case. The time keeping is very accurate. I like the red second hand, and the way it jumps ahead for each second. (I cannot hear the tick, unless I hold it up to an ear.) As an engineer and artist, I find it very modern and functional looking, and easy to read at a glance, with no extra junk. One big thing for me is that when I have to get out of bed in the dark, a push on the stem makes plenty of light ahead. It is just bright enough to see obstacles, but not enough to ruin my dark vision accommodation when I stop pushing the stem! This watch at $30 beats anything I've seen 100 times more expensive. What a deal!

The perfect watch
Reviewed in the United States on May 17, 2016

I've worn most of the big Swiss brands costing thousands of dollars, but I always end up going back to my Easy Reader. Now, I'm not saying it has a unique in house mechanical movement, hand finished case, or details that need to be appreciated under a loupe, but for what a watch is supposed to do it's perfect. No matter how much money I've spent on watches I've never been able to find the right combination of comfort, sturdiness, accuracy, and legibility that the Easy Reader has.

Most watches these days are way too big, too heavy, too thick, or otherwise uncomfortable. 35mm is the perfect size for me and I hope Timex doesn't kill it in favor of going crazy big like everyone else. Also, I don't know why there are so few watches with Arabic numerals. I need to be able to quickly and accurately tell the time under stressful conditions, and I appreciate how Timex uses Arabic numerals and an uncluttered dial.

Speaking to its sturdiness, I'm wearing my 7 year old Easy Reader right now and it's been completely battered over the years. I wear it when commercial fishing and there isn't a place on the watch that isn't scratched or dented. I've never had a problem with water resistance either, but truth be told I did open the case back and rubbed a bunch of silicon around the gasket before sealing it back up, so that no doubt helped.

It's also the most comfortable watch I wear. After removing one link from the expansion bracelet it fits like it was designed for me. I also view the expansion bracelet as a safety feature for me. Should the bracelet get hung up on moving machinery it will just slip off instead of pulling my hand along with it. It's happened and the Timex was slingshot off of my wrist and into a steel bulkhead. I put it back on and it worked like nothing had happened. The relative thinness of the case allows it to slip easily under sleeves where other watches would get hung up on.

This watch does have some finicky aspects, but considering the ridiculously low price, they're not even worth mentioning.

Bottom line: This is the best watch for what watches are supposed to do, no gimmicks.

First off let me get a few things clear from my experience with this watch vs the reviews.

1. this watch fits perfectly nice on my wrist, i'm not a kid by any means i'm a 6 foot 3 230lb man who has a pretty thick wrist. It feels perfectly comfortable on my wrist, it feels like its barely there but keeps its place on my wrist and it's not even close to being fully stretched out but its also not loose.
2. The instructions, you mean what instructions? the one it comes with is just it saying its water resistant in like 7 different languages, to get the ACTUAL instructions in how to set this you have to go online. That being said I did NOT have as much trouble as some people in the reviews did, I set the time day and date within under a minute of setting it up. I however have not set the alarm yet as i'm debating whether I even need to.
3. The quality, it feels like a very solid product I dont feel like its a cheap dimestore watch it feels like one of those deals you find in a store where you get the feeling you're getting your moneys worth for what you're paying for, this is a solid watch.
4. Check your battery, keep an eye on how good the timekeeping is, I suspect alot of people have gotten faulty batteries which does happen in such a mass produced watch but its really no fault on the product itself.
5. Awesome for winter, I keep very bulky watches (like my casio rangeman which is a 175 dollar watch) but in winter time, especially going into the city you dont want a bulky watch that makes having sweaters and gloves and getting things out of your pocket difficult, this easily slips under my gloves, sweater and doesn't obstruct me getting things from my pocket, its very streamlined. I love that.

Overall I think this is a great watch. It reminds me alot of what my Grandfather wore and I think that is what it was aiming for, your grandpa's old expandable band timekeeper, It wasn't the most beautiful thing on the planet but it got the job done and kept on ticking.

small update: its accurately keeping time, on the dot and its been a few days now.

2nd update: its been a month now still as accurate as the day I set it.

3rd update: its now may 10th and its still keeping time and hasn't missed a beat, still on the same minute as every other accurate watch. It's been good to me in the rain, washing my hands, etc. I did get the silver tone and if you do some hard labor you'll get scratches here and there but this is a working man's watch that wants to look nice and it's doing its job at that.

4th update: through rain snow and hot and cold weather still haven't missed a beat. I haven't even set the timer to fix it other then DST

final update: this thing is still ticking, I haven't had to re-adjust it and it's keeping time accurately, it's now august 2018.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great easy-to-read face dial, even in the dark!

I am a woman but like the larger size of the face dial of this men's watch, not too big nor too little. Has a white background with black numerals and a red second hand. The best feature for me is that even though it is analog (which I prefer) it does have roll dials for both the day of the week and date which is kind of hard to find these days. The dial also lights up (Indiglo feature) by depressing the single watch stem which is also used to change the time, day & date so that it is streamlined like an old-fashioned watch. Changing the day of week and date is accomplished by pulling out on the watch stem (two differing degrees) and turning forward or backwards through the hours 24 hours of the day. Notice when your desired day of the week turns up on the dial--that will be past 12 o'clock midnight, then you set to the appropriate hour. The date will also change past 12 o'clock midnight (near 2am) so you'll need to align day of week & date by turning the dial. Initially setting the day & date seems a bit of a pain in this instantaneous gratification world we now live in, but once it's set you're good to go for a while. I just had to reset mine due to Leap Year but that only happens once every 4 years! Timex is not a fancy watch, but it famously reliable.

I got this watch to replace a self-winding Seiko day-date watch. Even though the Timex watch is relatively inexpensive, I still needed the watch to look good and show the day and date. Reading reviews, I was concerned that the flexible metal watch band might bee too small, but it turned out fine and I even had to remove one of the skinny links. It also has a nice indigo light, which my Seiko does not have. As for battery life ... I have no idea.

Here's a couple more useful details. Since I weight only 165 pounds and the watch band had only one skinny link too many, the metal flex band is likely to be too small if you weight over 180 pounds. Timex sells similar watches with extra long metal bands and I would order them instead if you weight over 180 pounds. Also, contrary to some reviews, the stem is quite easy to pull out to adjust time and date, but you need to know how. The sides and top of the stem are buried in the watch case, so to pull out the stem you fingernail UNDER the stem, where there is a gap between the stem and the case.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easiest to read watch I've ever owned.

I had been looking for a self-winding watch that would never need a battery or have to be wound manually when I spotted this one. The ad mentioned a 10-year battery and I thought I could live with that.

I really like the large easy-to-read dial with actual numbers instead of those pretentious roman numerals. Great contrast too.

My previous watch would gain about 5 minutes a week and that got pretty frustrating. I've had this watch for close to a week now and it's been holding within a second or two of my cell phone. I'm impressed!

The twist band was okay but felt a bit tight so I simply replaced it with my old fold-and-snap band.

The glow-in-the-dark dial doesn't, at least not very well. I wasn't looking for that functionality so I'm okay with it. (Update - I just discovered that the built-in glow dial DOES work. You simply have to push in the stem! I suppose that's the one thing that this watch lacks: Instructions.)

Can't speak to the water resistance yet but, since I'm pretty hard on watches, I often shower with my watch on to get the crud off and I'll know then if it's resistant enough for me. Reminds me of those old Timex ads: "Takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'!"

One small frustration is that there's no quick way to set the day of the week. As received, it was set to Monday and, to get it to Wednesday, I had to turn the hour hand through two days to get the weekday correct. Day of the month was easy and I liked that I could go up or down with the numbers.

I think I'm really going to like this watch, especially at the unbeatable price!

A great watch for an everyday handyman! Virtually indestructible! This is my forth in 25 years! I never take them off. We live on a Lake and I swim and dive with the watch on! It definitely “takes a lickin’ And keeps on tickin’”! Each watch has worked for 8 to 10 years and thru about 3 battery replacements. The water resistance never fails and I have never had the night light quit in any of the watches. And I use the night light daily after dark and when I wake up in bed. In my opinion (I am 81 years old) there is no better watch, regardless of the money! Buy it! You will be very glad you did!

I replaced an easy reader with an identical easy reader, only needed to adjust the band for size. The Indiglo light is fabulous in dark conditions and doesn't affect the roughly 3 year longevity of the battery. Simply pressing the crown is the momentary switch for illuminating the entire dial. Day/date is a bonus. I have total faith in the good looking Timex Easy Reader and only needed a new watchband after many years of wear and grime under the hard conditions as a builder. I chose the entire watch with band because just a good flexible watchband is near the cost of this quality band and watch combined. The band could rate up there with a 'twist-o-flex'. I will retain my older watch as a spare since it's still as accurate as the day I bought it.

I got this because ultimately it’s quicker and easier to glance at my wrist than to take out my phone to see the time. So being able to read the dial easily and quickly was very important to me. This watch has big easy to read numbers just like the picture shows. The expansion wristband holds the watch in place comfortably and is very easy to put on and off. The back light is a great plus for darkened areas and the use couldn’t be easier - you just push on the single button which is also the setting stem. It keeps very accurate time. And I like the way it looks.

I also got it because ultimately every digital watch I have ever owned has been a pain to set with multiple buttons and having to push the right button or combination of buttons to reset the time because of travel and time zones or daylight savings or after replacing the battery. After the last one I vowed NO MORE DIGITAL WATCHES!

The good:
Easy to read dial.
Easy to use backlight.
Easy to set (though it’s a bit tedious setting the date the very first time you get it).
Looks nice on my wrist.
Easy to put on and take off.

Could use Improvement:
Not really anything in my opinion.

This is my second same exact watch like this. I love it. The old one's battery finally died after umpteen years. The watch is priced so well it was cheaper to prime in a new one than to take the old one in and have the battery replaced. Probably would have cost about the same with wasting my time and my car's gas. Anyway I like the analog dial and the looks I get when I tell someone the time is quarter to 4 and they have to convert that to digital like their phones. I even had someone say when I quickly told them the time, "wow that was fast, I didn't even see you take out your phone. My only complaint is some months only have 30 days. Could someone fix that?

Great value watch. The band is cheap and has been replaced.

I purchased this in 2012, I have gone through 3 bands and the light just stopped working in March 2020. The watch died in August 2020. I have yet to replace the battery.

I assume the light function will return when the new battery is installed. I’ll update.

I have worn the watch on and off for 8 years, I have showered with it, gotten rained on, sweated in MD and KS summers. The watch is durable and great value.

The face is small for men who prefer bigger faces. Not quite a “standard” female watch small.

If you are looking for a basic watch that has a day, date and lights up. Look no further.

At age 82 and I guess I can afford more - but why pay for something you don't need? Everyone is asking you what day is it - with the hidden motive - is he in his right mind. I can look at it and read the face and I know what day it is. It tells time. To get exercise I am building a garden swinging pick, and shovel. I am out in the dirt and heat. It takes abuse and works. I like the metal band - leather tends to smell. It is a beautiful watch. If I was the manufacture of the metal watch band, I think that he could have made the thin metal band just a little thicker or harder because I work at times I have something falls on my wrist as I reach for garden tools and have noted that the dull metal band tends to remember where it was hit.

This is my 5th or 6th Timex. They are reliable, water resistant, lightweight, fit comfortably, have a hypo-allergic stainless steel flex-band & back, cost only about $40, and last about 4-5 years before either the crystal gets scratched enough to impair visibility, or the battery runs down enough to slow time-keeping. I used to wear much more expensive watches, but these work just as well, as long as you are not trying to impress people with a blatant display of wealth. Tip: using the backlight at night does shorten battery life. Watch can be rinsed off under the faucet to remove loose dirt or sweat and then dried immediately without damage. I do this routinely after gardening. But I would not try to immerse it (read fine print in the info. packet).

5.0 out of 5 stars It Is What It Is
Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2015
Color: Silver-Tone/WhiteVerified Purchase
It all started when I misplaced my trusty 21 jewels Japanese automatic. Don’t ask me how it happened but it did. I’m a dad of two, self-employed, always in some sort of situation or another, and no one has accused me of being organized. It’s probably within twenty feet of me right now, but it could be on the other side of the world for all I know. At any rate, it wasn’t on my wrist anymore and I felt naked. Sure, I’ve got a phone, but I grew up with a watch, spent a lot of time learning to tell time when I was five or six, and I’m damn sure not letting that all go to waste. I had to find a decent substitute watch until mine turned up. Something affordable, something solid, something utilitarian yet pleasing to the eye. Something that could take a lickin’ and keep on tickin’. That’s it! A Timex. My first watch was a seven dollar Timex I bought with my own money when I was six. I can still remember my dad taking me to the local drugstore after school. It was a yellow brass case Easy Reader with a black rubber strap. A man’s watch, huge on my scrawny boy wrist, but I loved it and had it for many years until at some point it disappeared….See a recurring theme here?

So I began my search for a watch that wouldn’t break the bank or, well, break. As I browsed, I came to this one – the Timex Easy Reader T20461. I immediately loved the look of it with its white face, Helvetica numbers, red 24-hour feature, silver-brass case, and stainless steel expander bracelet - which reminded me of the twist-o-flex watch bands my dad and grandfather always wore. The watch itself is akin to much more expensive “railroad” watches I had admired, but never considered buying. Without thinking twice I threw it into my cart, checked out and the man in brown brought it to my door within two days.

Upon opening the box I wasn't disappointed. It looked better than the photos, felt solid and was easy to set. Yeah, the day and date require a little extra effort, but if this ruins your week you probably shouldn't get out of bed. It was the first time I wore an expander watch band and I was pleasantly surprised to find that it didn’t pinch my arm hair at all. I’m no gorilla, but I’m not in kindergarten anymore either. One thing did bother me, though. While I appreciated the band, the way it tapers just looked a little lady-like on my wrist. Or maybe it was my wrist making the watchband look lady-like. Who knows? It didn’t bother me too much and I loved the watch, so thought nothing more of it. That is, until I happened upon a watchstrap rack at a large big box store that shall remain unnamed. Hanging there was collection of the old school twist-o-flex expander bracelets I remembered so fondly from my dad and granddad. I found one that matched the shine of the watch case (the original band is a bit dull by comparison), paid a whopping 7 bucks for it (solid stainless steel), took it home, removed a few links to fit my lady-like wrist (it’s not hard – you just need a decent pocket knife and a set of needle-nosed pliers or tweezers), slid it on my wrist and voila! The perfect watch for me. Easy on, easy off; tasteful styling; understated; doesn’t scream “look at me, I spend too much money on stuff because I feel inadequate!” or “Mug me! I’m obviously fiscally irresponsible so relieve me of my money!”

I hope I don’t lose it, but if I do…it’s easy to replace. I wear it with pride and can’t recommend it highly enough for men like me that need a practical, no-nonsense, solid, reliable, unpretentious timepiece. So far it’s been dropped several times, drooled on, had coffee spilled on it and I forgot to take it off when I jumped in the shower the other day. Still as good as new. Oh yeah, Indiglo can’t be beat. You might have a Rolex, but your Rolex doesn’t have Idiglo.

Sorry to say my other watch still hasn’t turned up. If it does, I’ll be happy to see it, give it a hug, then place it safely in my sock drawer until next time we meet.

UPDATE: Still taking a lickin' and keeps on tickin'. Has a few character marks now, but runs as well as the day I bought it. Doesn't seem to gain or lose a second. I rarely take it off so it experiences whatever I do. I have, however, traded in the stretchy band for a leather nato that I snagged off another Timex (see pic).

Have been wearing Timex watches for about 60 years, and was devastated when I misplaced and could not find the one I had been wearing. I had bought an inexpensive replacement (another brand) at a local pharmacy, but it did not have the background light that I needed. Then, about two or three weeks after I bought it, the expansion band broke and I just threw the whole watch away. So I scoured the Internet for a Timex. Amazon only had "used" items available. I had some trepidations about buying a "used" watch, even though the seller represented it to be in very good condition. But I am blown away by the excellent condition of the watch. No way to tell it was "used". As expected, the face is bright, the numbers large, and it is easy to tell the time at a quick glance. The day and date features are a bit harder to read, but still legible. Only limitation--the expansion band is a bit tight and I may have to add a link or two. It will probably be cheaper to buy a larger expansion band than to ask a jeweler to add links, but that is not enough to downgrade the 5 star rating for this purchase. It is still a bargain.
[Note added July 2018: After one year, the watch is still working perfectly and looks brand new. Have not even had to change the battery yet.]

Typical Timex product. It functions well and is easy to set. I did download instructions because those included come in multiple languages and very fine type that is challenging for me to read. It has the same features as similar watches that are thicker and much more expensive. I have small wrists and did not want a 38-44 mm watch face. This Timex is only 36 mm and looks good on my wrist. I wanted a watch with incandescent hands to read in the dark without touching the watch. However, the indiglo face lets me read it in the dark with the push of a button from my other hand. It was a small compromise to save hundreds of dollars. The brown band is a little heavier than I wanted, but it is sturdy leather and should last several years.

Have owned the watch 6 weeks now and it is performing well. I have reset it for time zone changes only. I am able to start the change as the second hand strokes 12 and click to start it based on a cellphone or computer clock. So far the second hand has stayed synchronized with the computer clock.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice watch, setup was tricky

For the money, this watch is great - it has everything I was looking for:
-Uncluttered, easy to read face.
-Day and date window.
-24 hr. inner ring.
The "Indiglo" light is a nice little bonus.
The only thing that was frustrating was the setup. First, you have to remove a little plastic tab that surrounds the crown to activate the battery. Standard stuff, I've owned a lot of watches like that, but when I pulled the little tab, it left a tiny ring of plastic around the inside of the crown, preventing me from pushing the crown in to start the watch, and it took a lot of effort to clear that little plastic remanent out without wrecking the crown. Whatever.
Then, I unfolded the little wad of paper included with the watch expecting to find the time/date setting instructions. The paper is big enough to include all the necessary instructions in multiple languages, but instead, it just has an online link that's supposed to take you to Timex's watch setup page. Huh? And the page isn't laid out the best - you still have to hunt around to find the right fields to enter your watches model number to get the instructions. Ultimately, I learned that the time and day settings were easy as I expected, however the day setting took a heck of a lot of crown twisting!
Anyway, nice watch, and it has been running fine. :)

I purchased this watch as a replacement for a Timex Explorer watch, which had lasted me many years, but had lately not been keeping good time. I would have just purchased another Explorer watch, but all the ones I could find had white hands with a white dial - very difficult to see. i wanted a watch that I would not need to put my reading glasses on to see. This watch is perfect - black hands on a white dial, and you can see it very well when you turn on the Indiglo light. The only negative thing about it is that the day of the week and date are tiny and hard to see, but that was not that important to me.
A bonus is that even though the Explorer and Easy Reader have about the same diameter case, the Easy Reader has a slightly larger face. This is due to the Explorer having a large decorative ring around the case.
I am very pleased with this purchase, I hope it holds up as well as my old Explorer did.

I had bought this same watch 10 years ago. I wanted more features and tried a different digital Timex and also a Casio that is both analog and digital. I found the features to be too complicated for an old guy like me. A timer would be nice, but I can get by using the second hand. Indiglo works great and is better than the lighting on my other watches. I like having both the day and date and also a white face rather than black. The settings are easy to do, but you do need to download the instructions to get the setup done. It's easier if you can understand why it's necessary to follow the instructions. The band is slightly tight on my wrist and I'm not a big guy. I did not have to remove any links.

The watch comes in Timex's classic black box. The watch is as it looks. A reasonably semi shiny stainless steel model. No cheap plastics that will break, or look lousy in a few months of wear. Mine has white hands on it, with a steel colored second hand. The background is a nice dark color with white numbers. Very easy to read. The day and numbers in black. Also easy to read. The flexy band easily grabs my wrist. It's got a well made feel to it. Not too tight, not to loose. Looks of good quality. The indiglo function unfortunately has a notch at the top that doesn't light up. But it's pretty minor, and not worth a star. I can live with it. After you dance around Timex's website finding ur model, which is a small pain (they really should post the model number for easier location), you get to set the watch. This is a pretty straight forward process. The only trouble is the turn wheel. It's a bit smooth. It's also stupidly small. Which makes it very difficult to use if you have big fingers. Hint!! Hint! Timex! Bigger wheel, or more indents in that turning wheel so it's easier to grab! Eventually, you get the time day and date on it. With some frustration with the little slick turning wheel. Currently i'm knocking off a star for not having their website more easier to find the correct manuals (no model numbers listed) and for the wheel being so small and slick. The watch itself is very nice, but the website could be better, and that little knob of a wheel could be better too. So it gets 4 stars. I might have been able to overlook the website, but with both the website and the knob wheel giving me some annoyances, it is what it is. But it is a nice watch. Just keep in mind those 2 things.

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy Reader vs Weekender

Color: Dark Brown/Silver-ToneVerified Purchase
I recently bought both the Easy Reader and the Weekender versions. I bought the Weekender first because it was highly discounted at the time. It came with one of the colorful NATO type bands which I knew I would replace with a standard brown leather band.

Comparisons:

1. They are both easy to read but the edge goes to the Weekender because it doesn't have the Day/Date feature which I think clutters up the face.

2. Also, the hands on the Easy Reader extend across the center of the dial. I'm still getting used to this. The Weekender lacks the extension.

3. The Easy Reader is slightly smaller in diameter than the Weekender. I actually bought the Easy Reader because I thought the Weekender dial was a little larger than what I was used to. (Timex Camper).

I wear both about the same amount of time now. The more I wear the Weekender the less I notice it's larger dial. The Weekender I bought was marked down to under fifteen bucks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hardware is what I expected, so far. Included instructions were inadequate

Bought this because I couldn't get my old, long-term Timex Indeglo back together after changing its exhausted battery. This one arrived today, so no experience yet with its longevity. Based on prior experience, however, I expect long life from battery. Instructions were included in an infinite number of languages, but they fail to address the fundamental process of setting time, day, and date. Strange, but Timex.com has instructions, once you input the watch's model number (T20041). To set date, pull stem half-way out (takes practice). You can move the date either up and down by rotating the stem either way. The only way to set the correct day is to pull the stem all the way out, then turn it until the day window indicates accurately, then set the time. Again, you can rotate the stem in either direction without problem; that was new to me, and welcome. The top layer of this watch's band is leather, as advertised; the bottom is not. No comment, as I immediately replaced that band with the metal one from the old watch--finicky process. For the price, I recommend this item.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great "work-horse" watch
Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2021
Color: Dark Brown/Silver-ToneVerified Purchase
Keep in mind that everything is about "nickle & dime" the consumer to death....and lets make it with cheaper quality materials so it falls apart sooner....oh yes, and lets not forget....(more often than not), companies are making related product services harder & harder to find (such as getting a new watch battery).

That said, this is a great "work-horse" watch.
The band is a "sturdy" good quality leather band. The watch is very water resistant ...and it can get
"normal-work-related-smacked" without breaking.
The window for "day of the week" along with the "date" window is more helpful than you can imagine.
And it's very handy being able to light-up the face when needed.

It's a great watch to wear in a garden or any rough & tumble work place.

Years ago, Timex had a commercial that said: "Takes a licking and keeps on ticking"....and it's still true about this Timex watch.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but might be too small for some

Color: Dark Brown/Silver-ToneVerified Purchase
Great value, nice looks, and it checks my most important boxes (readable numbers, 3-hand, day, and date). The illumination is a nice plus.

Two criticisms:
(1) It might be too small for some men. No idea what my wrist size is, but 35mm looks almost like a kid's or woman's watch on me.
(2) The strap feels cheap, stiff, and a tiny bit itchy to me. Not sure if this is caused by the size of the watch or the strap, but this watch does not want to sit in the middle of my wrist. I have to adjust its position frequently.

This might be a perfect unisex option for women who find women's watches absurdly small and difficult to read. I'm going to see if it fits my mom. The only downside for someone like my mom is that she'll forget that the date needs to be adjusted for varying days in the month, and she'll stop using it if she has to make any kind of adjustment.

I’ve gotten and loved this watch before, but this time it came already ticking and with the Indiglo feature entirely broken. I’m not sure whether it’s worth going through the trouble of returning it, but it certainly is frustrating!
If you work with water or anything dirty, you’ll have to replace the band. No question. It’s easy to do, and the watch itself is very water-resistant, so I don’t mind that much. The day-date feature is my favorite thing, but you WILL have to remember to adjust from 31 to 1 at the end of shorter months. Altogether a great practical-use watch for the price.

I really don't need a watch with cell phones, computers, cars having clocks but wanted one for every once in a while. It did take me about twenty minutes to set the day and date. The warranty info that comes with the watch doesn't have instructions so you have to look up the Timex website. You have to look under Easy Reader 35mm. Since it is a Timex I think it will last as long time, so I look forward to using it. I only gave 4 stars because I haven't actually used the watch. Just got it today and set the day and date.

While this is my fourth or fifth Timex, and I expect it to be as reliable as the others, this is also the first Timex I have ever purchased that displays the day of the week as well as the date. Unfortunately, this changes everything in terms of setting up the watch. Setting the day of the week is very difficult and time consuming. You are going to have to hunt through on-line instructions for even a hint and the process can easily take 20 minutes or more. And that is if you haven't confused AM or PM along the way (the watch offers no clue as to which is which.) Some will say, hey, it's a 30 buck watch, what do you want? Well, I want a watch that is dependable and reasonably easy to set up. Unless you have the patience of a saint, I would skip this model next time.

Love that the whole face lights up with Indigo and markings are big and legible. Makes it so easy to read the time at night with my weakening eyesight. Wears very comfortably on my wrist.
Seems to be extremely accurate. I have had this watch for a few weeks now. Set it to Apple Time, including the second sweep hand, when I got it. A few weeks later, the watch doesn't seem to have drifted more than a few seconds from Apple Time. AMAZING!!!

Some reviewers have complained about loud ticking coming from the watch. The ticking is a bit noticeable when I am working at my desk, but putting it in my night table drawer blocks the sound and doesn't bother me when sleeping.
Main complaint I have is that the watch strap is the standard length (120mm for the side with holes), which is much too long for me. With my skinny wrists, I have to make a new hole between the two innermost holes in order to get the watch to fit comfortably and stay in position. Would have been nice to have a shorter strap so that the excess length doesn't stick out.

I haver always been happy with the look and comfort of the Timex watch of this type. I have had several of them over the years and this is no exception. Easy to read dial, well lite in the dark when the button is pushed and fits comfortable around the wrist. My only complaint is setting the date and month. The date was not too bad but the month is a pain becuase it needs to be done at a certain time of the day. Since I rarely use the date and month, its no big deal but just an annoyance.

Setting the day kind of sucked you had to just keep spinning the hours handle. But once it’s set it’s good to go.

Would definitely recommend.

This is my every day watch, and I get regular compliments on it. The "suede" side of the bonded leather strap looks pretty grody after three years, but I could replace it with a more durable strap. I am not careful with it, this watch has sustained many drops, splashes, and knocks but works fine and the crystal is only superficially scratched. The day/date is fiddly but not too difficult to adjust every other month. The backlight is perfect, not too blue or bright to check at night or in a theater. I've only had to change the battery once.

So happy i bought this watch! Timex has a good reputation so i was looking forward to getting this. Took a bit of reading to understand how to set the date but that's not super important. The face diameter is the perfect size: not too big, not too small. The band i expected to be a brown but it turned out to be more maroon, which was also fine by me. The indiglo light is a nifty little feature and works well.

The only reason i didn't give 5 stars is because the band doesn't fit my small wrist well (my wrist is about 6 inches). My fault for buying a men's watch i suppose. I wear it using the 2nd to last hole but it spins around so i constantly have to adjust it. And the last hole is just too tight. Otherwise its perfect for me. Haven't tested the water resistance so no thoughts there.

Overall, a great watch at this price point!

Years ago every flex band watch I owned came with a band that was too large and needed links removed. Now the Timex watches come with bands that are too small. And I don't have giant wrists!

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy to read
Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2014
Color: Silver-Tone/BlueVerified Purchase
Easy to read watch with a nice look and comfortable flex band. I bought it to replace a new Expedition that I just could not wear because of the nasty itchy rash I got from the nylon band! This watch is fine, even when I am out in the hot sun and damp I have no reactivity. The day and date are on the small side, and considering that this is called an "Easy Reader" I think that is a flaw. Also I ordered two, one for my husband, and the date was impossible to set. On the one I kept I was able to wind the hour hand around and around to back up two days (yes just like you had to do 40 years ago) to get the correct day to go with the date. the instructions say there are three click stops on the stem, for time day and date, but I only got two to work so sent it back.

The return was a mini nightmare, Amazon did not give me the usual option of printing a return shipping label, so I chose UPS pickup. The UPS window was 2-5 days so I put it out about 10am on Friday (day one) and came home to find a missed you label from UPS. The next date for pick up was Monday so I put it out Sunday night and left it there until Tuesday afternoon, then called UPS to see what was up. I got India and the woman told me that there had been a pickup attempt at 8pm on Monday, when I was home watching TV 6 feet from the door. I said nobody knocked on the door and my dogs would have barked. She said they aren't allowed to know on the door. Hello? they knock on the door all the time when dropping off. She said the driver would have the shipping label which was explained on the returns page, but then said Oh but the driver can't put the label on the box, he has to hand it to you and you put it on. So I said Okay and how do I do that if he is not allowed to knock on the door so I know he's here? And how about my job I have to go to every day? I said no wonder UPS is circling the drain! So then she wanted my phone number and I said no, so she said she'd give me a supervisor, put me on hold for 5 minutes and disconnected. So I called Amazon and the rep who was also in India listened politely and sent me a return label. Thank you.

The indiglo light is nice but would be better if it stayed out briefly after pressing the stem. It's a dead man's switch. I haven't tried water resistance. The only drawback is the band. I will swap it out for something easier to get on and off. I wanted a day/date watch and unfortunately, this is the smaller size face you can get. The quality of the watch is really good: the watch case including the glass face are of excellent build. Set the time, day, and date by winding the stem clockwise or counter - takes a few minutes to get right, but then shouldn't be a problem. Conventional watch battery, readily available and inexpensive.

As a watch to tell time it appears to be quite good although after months I will have a better idea as to just how accurate it will be. I have two problems with the watch; setting day/date is very difficult as the mid positions of the stem are much too hard to locate and the band does not appear to be adjustable -- it is a little too long for my wrist. Neither of these is negative enough to justify replacement as the face is more readable than most.

3.0 out of 5 stars Watch works
Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2021
Color: Silver-Tone/WhiteVerified Purchase
The light works great and the dial and hands are very easy to read. The watch is relatively thin and is what I was looking for. The weak point is the design of the day/date mechanism which is recessed in a very small cutout on the dial face. It appears to operate on a purely mechanical rotating dial system, similar to an old auto odometer. The only setting and adjustment control is by the pre-digital era watch stem and is complicated to operate. The changing of the day/date setting is by using a particular sequence of pushing the stem in and out from its 3 positions and rotating the stem. The small rectangular cutout for day/date is in the 3 o'clock position and is covered by either of the hands when they are in the 3 o'clock position.
Whatever you do, keep the operating instructions with you if you need to change the date/day when away from home.

I'm not sure how well the watch works because I've only had it two days, but the expandable band is a joke. I'm not a big guy. Usually I have to downsize items to fit me. I expected to have to remove a link or two for the watch to fit me. The band is ridiculously small and tight. You'd think a company like Timex would err on the side of caution and send their watches with a band that can be downsized. I called Timex customer service and they offered new links free if you mail the watch to them, pay postage, and wait two weeks for a return. Obviously, you could just go to a jeweler and buy a new band for all that time and expense, but isn't that why a customer buys from Timex in the first place, to get a good and fair product? As for the "easy read," it's great. Just what the doctor ordered for my old, tired eyes. Just wish I didn't have to wear it on my pinky instead of my wrist.

You guys need to offer longer bands for larger wrists as an upgrade, or at least sell them in easy measurement readings for replacement. I wound up with a black leather wrist band that doesn't match the gold watch. But I do use it as work watch, but I really wanted the twist O' flex wrist band.

3.0 out of 5 stars Surprised by how much I enjoy this little watch
Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2021
Color: Dark Brown/Silver-ToneVerified Purchase
This model of Easy Reader has a surprisingly classic design, and I'm a sucker for the black hands with red second hand. The face is a surprising (in a good way) textured silver, rather than a plain, flat look.

The included leather strap is more supple than I would have expected, but on the thicker side, so it's really up to your tastes.

The indiglo function on my first unit was non-functioning, so I returned it, and it works on the second unit I received. It's fantastically useful, but a small (though admittedly unimportant) sliver on the top of the dial doesn't get illuminated. Not deal breaking, but sort of a shame for how close it was to being well-thought out.

The biggest problem for me is the fact that the day/date function is so frustrating to set. The time and date are set directly from the crown, but the day must be changed by winding the time around 24 hours at a time, which is a nightmare. Considering it's not a perpetual calendar, this can mean having to go a full weeks worth of hours around the start of a month because I can't set the day directly. This took the watch from 4 stars to 3, specifically because I don't want to spend 10 minutes fussing with the date every month roll-over when other watches are so much easier to deal with.

Cost of return/repair, I believe under warranty, was about half of what I paid for the watch. Decided I didn't need to know what time it was in the dark.
Dial illumination light failed after very short period. Now about 2 years after purchase, It died. If I can locate the one that this one replaced, will use this band and at least get additional time out of the band. Otherwise, will look for a different manufacturer and roll the dice on that one.

I like the general layout of the watch. This is the second Timex I've purchased from Amazon in the past few months. The band on the first one failed. The next one, the winding stem would not engage the "Day of the Week" feature. Time and "Day of the Month" adjustments OK. Thought about sending it back. Decided to just turn off the watch and let the actual day catch up to the watch display. Only need to adjust day if the watch battery runs down and is replaced. Used Timex's for years, but it seems they have developed quality issues.

2.0 out of 5 stars Could use some improvements

This watch was purchased for an older adult male who preferred the simplicity of numbers. He was instantly turned off by how small the face of the watch is. Still interested, an attempt was made to set the time, day and date. Time and date were easy to set but not the day-- which could not be changed. It seems that even an older adult male who wants a watch without a lot of bells and whistles, still prefers that it looks like a "man's watch" and is easy to set.

This is a cheap imagination of a Timex. I have a 71/4 inch wrist and this band was too tight. The case feels then and cheap. The second hand is way too thin I can barely see the it.
If you want a great Timex buy xx the Timex 38mm weekender. It feels like a Timex. All you Timex fans out there know what I’m saying.
This is a boys watch in my opinion.

2.0 out of 5 stars Could’ve been better

I’ve been buying Timex watches for years and have never had a problem. I bought this watch because it looked easy to read, and it is, although the date could be bigger. Indiglow feature works great. My 2 issues are 1) I can not advance the day of the week(M-Sun)
2) The band came with defects, almost like it wasn’t formed correctly on some links which made the ends very sharp. I had to use pliers to bend the points back.
I use this as work watch, so these problems didn’t warrant me returning it.

The watch looks good but loses time daily. I sent it back and paid ahead for the $8 shipping as they requested I do. They received it and sent me a message telling me they will let me know in a few weeks what is wrong with it and how much it will cost me for them to fix it. What! It's a $40 watch! They should have sent a new one since this one is obviously defective. I should have trashed it and got a different brand. I would not recommend purchasing this watch or any Timex watch since this is how they do business.

1.0 out of 5 stars Can’t Change the Day of the Week
Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2021

This is a fine looking watch......but does not work properly. It has a box with the day, and a box with the date. It is possible to change the date, but impossible to change the day of the week. I must have tried to fix it more than a dozen times, and had a few other people try, with no results. Unfortunately for me, I finally just gave up trying and ordered a different watch.....but have missed the date to return it. Know of anyone who just doesn’t care what day of the week it is? They can order this watch and enjoy the confusion.

1.0 out of 5 stars Amazon sent me a used/defective watch

When I received and opened my package I immediately noticed that the little box the watch came in had been previously opened. The box was torn and had been taped together. The watch itself looked fine. It was clean and I didn't see any scratches but the plastic guard that goes under the crown had been removed and someone had already set the time. I reset the time to my local time and I set the date but I could not set the day of the week because it was stuck on Tuesday. The watch itself looks fine and the numbers are big and clear making it very easy to see and tell the time, unfortunately I have to return the watch.

1.0 out of 5 stars Really liked this watch, but....warranty is a joke.

I really liked this watch, but the Indiglo backlight died in less than a year. Even a new battery did not bring it back (although the watch itself still ran). Based on the advertised 1-year-waranty, I filed a warranty claim with Timax, and a second, and a third.... they ignored them all. Finally got a response after almost a month... they wanted to know what country I lived in. I told them, USA, and still haven't heard a word back. My warranty is running out, as they avoid responsibility. Will update this review when and if I hear back from Timex.

The box it was packaged in was old and torn. The date was difficult to set and the day impossible. It was the second one I ordered. I returned the first because it was a gift and I was embarrassed to give it with the box torn up. The box in the replacement watch was worse than the first, but I gave the gift anyway. Then I found out that the day could not be set. I have bought Timex watches from Amazon before and was always pleased. This particular product should not be sold by you.

The description didn't say that it was a lady's watch, but it is very small, and looks rather funny on the wrist of a man. It isn't a bad watch but, if you're looking for something to wear as a man, think twice about this one. It is dainty and tinny. I tired to wear it, but I got some strange looks because it looks so much like a women's watch--though the pictures don't make that obvious. You just have to see how small it is in comparison to other men's watches.

1.0 out of 5 stars Impossible to set

I'm returning this watch even though it had all the features I wanted. No instructions so had to go to website. Trying to follow directions, I found there was no way to pull out the crown, which is very small, just using my fingers. Resorted to using a box cutter into tiny space just to pull it out enough to set the time. Had to use a plyers to pull it out far enough to set date and day, whole stem came out several times. After a half hour or so, I managed to set everything, but had to spin crown through 24 hours to advance day. So disappointed as the rest of the watch was perfect for me.

So I bought this watch for my children to use for timed exams and it stopped working 5 months later. Just dead (not battery issue). This happened to me with the last Timex too. The one before that I had forever. What is going on?
