Casio Men's Vintage CA53W-1 Calculator Watch

 Blast from the past!
My husband is the proud owner of this totally superfluous watch that serves zero function except to decorate his wrist and alert us when it’s 4:20. His “shall I calculate that?” quips are also hysterical, since even the simplest addition is ten times faster on his smart phone. The laughs have made this item worth every penny spent. Also, it looks cute, but that might just be his face.

5.0 out of 5 stars HELLBOOB

I have worn an original Casio calculator watch for something like 15 years. It’s light, and slim and super water proof. Plus you can write HELLBOOB (which is the most awesome thing you can write with upsidown numbers. It’s a fact. Trust an expert.) on the calculator function. So these new colors are all the way up my alley. My only complaint is they are NOT waterproof anymore. The back is just screwed on. But it’s cool. It’s cheap. And HELLBOOB lives.

this is literally the best watch. ever. no debate there. i've worn it every single day since i bought it 10 months ago and it still brings me immense joy whenever i look down at it. the functions are relatively easy to use and it's durable and secure. i adore my casio and get a LOT of compliments about it; i absolutely recommend this glorious watch. it has gotten me through dark times and helps me calculate tax in even the most difficult of situations. also it's really fun to make it say 8008135 and then show it to my friends and family. you would think that would get old after 10 months straight but it's still hilarious and nobody can tell me otherwise. if you want a high-quality, affordable, and surprisingly entertaining timepiece, my professional opinion is BUY THIS WATCH. you will NOT regret it.

Edit: I’ve been wearing this watch for 5 years now and it still holds up- I wear it every day. 8008135 has still not gotten old.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm a pretty heavy user

I first used this watch on my first Pacific crossing as a Captain on a B-747-400 in 1989. It has made many crossings: Teipei; Honkong; Manila; NRT; BOK; SYD; AKL; et.al. I have used it for fuel calculations verifying company generated flight plans. Used it crossing the Atlantic to Heathrow, then on to New Dehli. Water calculations, too, adding water ballast for sailplane racing. 1 gallon weighs 8.33#. My ship carries up to 50 gallons. I have probably bought 20-30, using them for gifts. Sometimes right off my wrist. Bands tend to break for me after several years. I'm a pretty heavy user. Now for sailing, I reach down to clean milfoil off my rudder. One leaked, but works fine after drying it out for an hour or two. I keep that one for dry land use, only. Though, it is hard to tell them apart after you clean the buttons with a tooth brush. I always keep an extra two or three in my chest of drawers. I give it 10 out of 10 stars. I fear the day they go out of production?????.

For years I have exclusively kept time with the black Casio calculator watch. The practicality is unequalled. Unfortunately, it wasn’t always the most fashionable accessory. The only color option was black and that just didn’t add up. Casio has finally resolved that issue by multiplying the color options. The numerical panel on the new colorful watches are a bit more difficult to read (the background is black, exactly opposite the normal LCD display you’re accustomed) and that subtracts from the experience, but that’s a small price to pay. This is the watch that will stand the test of time and now it comes with color coordinating options. Have the undivided attention of everyone in the room; get the watch that will bring you incalculable joy.

What a cool piece. I'm 33, so I'm just old enough to remember this watch being the coolest thing in the mid 80s, then progress to something only nerds and dorks would wear, then fade into obscurity. But since it's now 2017 and it's cool to be a geek again, this is now so nerdy it's awesome. I put it on a cool NATO style strap, and this watch gets as many compliments and is as fun to wear as my nice, conventional watches. It's the best style statement you can make for 17 bucks.

Functionality wise, it's awesome. Calculator, stopwatch, and dual time zones. No backlight, however. But overall, what a quality piece. I love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Casio CA53W Calculator Watch Review
Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2016
Color: greyVerified Purchase
This is a review of the Casio CA53W Calculator Watch. Back in primary school in the 80's, this was one of the watches that everyone wanted to own. Since I was more active with sports and swimming, my parents only got me a Casio that was 100M water resistant or more. Close to 30 years later, I am finally able to fulfill this desire. It does so in great success.

Features:
- Time with hours, minutes, and seconds. Also displayed on the main screen are the AM/PM indicator and the day of the week.
- Basic calculator.
- Alarm.
- Dual time zone.
- Stop watch.

Wishes to add to this watch:
- Electroluminescent display.
- At least 50M water resistance.

This would be the perfect watch with an electroluminescent display and at least 50M of water resistance. Other than that, I am completely pleased with this watch as it fulfills that vintage charm, has so many features, and has a very attractive and symmetrical display. Best of all, I am glad to have this one after finding out on the Casio website that this is being discontinued. A 4.5 out of 5.0 stars.

UPDATE July 11, 2016:
Attached are pictures of the Casio CA53W Calculator Watch compared to couple of affordable alternatives that are also from Casio, the Casio W800H-1AV ($12) and the Casio F105W-1A ($13). I wish the Calculator Watch had the Electroluminescent light of the F105W, which is the most attractive watch light in my experience. The F105W is just too small for my wrist, though the Calculator Watch is the perfect size.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best inexpensive watch you can spend your money on.

This is my 2nd watch. The part that holds the excess wrist strap down broke, but the band itself is fine. Unable to find another band, I just opted to buy a whole new watch for 16 bucks. My first watch was purchased in December of 2012. It is now December 2017, and it is still working with that same battery. I have no idea how long the watch was running when I bought it, but I would say that 5 years out of the battery is normal.

This watch is great. It is light enough that I do not feel the need to take it off. It is water proof for the things I do...occasional swimming and I leave it on when I shower. I have hit this watch on numerous things like counters and it has taken a beating and the watch is without scratches and works just as good as the day I bought it. This watch can take a beating. I wish that it had a light, but that's my only thing that I would change. And this watch gets people's attention if that's your thing. I have never had so many people make comments about how cool it is, and I have some pretty nice watches. This thing has received at least 10 times more comments than all of my other watches combined. The nice thing is that I never have to worry about someone trying to steal it, as opposed to my other watches. I like the look. I like the price. I have nothing bad to say about this little watch. If you are like me and grew up in the 80's, always wanted one of these watches but did not get because they were so expensive back then, I highly recommend this. Especially if you travel to the Caribbean via cruise ship and need a good watch to go swimming with, but not want to draw too much attention to yourself and to make sure you get back to your ship in time.

This is a cool part of Casio's history. I wanted one as a kid but never had one, then later got a small collection of G-shocks, and multi-sensor Pro-Treks, always buying giant technical ones for their cool styling. I finally ordered this one as a fun every day watch and I love it. It's super light weight and slim, but the feel is still high in precision.

It's got Casio's classic styling but understated with the reversed display and only has the calculator markings and no face markings and "WR." It may cost the same or even less than it did in the 80s, and the navy blue looks great. It's hard to go wrong for the price, and every function works perfectly with tiny but usable control buttons. The reversed display is difficult to see in low light but always seems visible when angled to the nearest light source. A back-light would be nice, but it's an excellent classic watch at an unbeatable price. Perfect!

Edit: The description lists the band's width as 24mm, which is the overall width. The width at the Spring Bars if you are replacing the band is 20mm.

The size is the same as the version from the 80s. In fact, it seems identical in every way. I think the other reviewers complaining about size aren’t realizing their wrists are just bigger now after 30 years.

I had one of these when I was around 10. That would’ve been 1990. I remember I had the alarm set to 7:10 am to remind me to get to the school bus stop on time.

For a few years, a family member had a job where every spring he had to open up and prepare things at a boys’ summer camp before the season began, and there were a few years where a bunch of us went up for the weekend and helped. It was a great time, I have a lot of memories from the years we went. One memory is how I lost my original Casio calculator watch.

There was a small lake so the camp had canoes and kayaks. It was the type of kayaks where your legs go inside it and you wear a sort of rubber skirt that snaps to the kayak to keep water out as you paddle. So knowing my watch was only water resistant (not water proof), I took it off and kept my watch on my lap under that kayak skirt to keep it safe.

Out on the lake, 100ft from shore, I got unbalanced and the kayak rolled over. I was stuck and panicking because I couldn’t undo the kayak skirt from the kayak. So I was trapped and could barely keep my head above water. Luckily a family member was out with me and was able to swim over to release me. He got me out and I was ok, but the watch fell to the bottom of the lake. I always wondered how long the water resistance lasted and how many mornings the alarm went off at 7:10 until the watch finally died.

Now all these years later I have replaced it! As far as I can tell, it’s the exact same design, minus the scratch from that time I wrecked my bike haha

Wish this watch could calculate cos and sin and exponential powers.... jk. I am not that smart and this helps me add and subtract when I run out of fingers and toes to count with. It also has a retro look to it that I think matches my personality. I get compliments on it all the time. I am use to wearing g-shock watches so was worried about the durability of this watch. However, after wearing the watch for over 4 months, I can attest that this watch not only looks nice, but is built well. I also have a newborn and I like how it doesn't always "bonk" against my son's head since it is low-profile (my g-shock had a big watch head and would constantly hit against my son's head).

Don't expect to be able to calculate and figure out dark matter with this watch, but wearing it makes you look like you could :)

They say a watch is a symbolic representation of the kind of man you are. You could tell the world that you waste money on pointless extravagance, sure. You can just be one of the many shallow individuals out there trying to prove they're more important than they really are.

But while you're on your yacht, sipping $1,000 martinis, you'll have that existential crisis. Why do I exist? What purpose do I have? Will my deeds be forgotten by the sands of time? Is this watch defining me as a man of worth or just a shallow husk of an individual, a Great Gatsby, provoking revulsion instead of admiration? If you're wearing an expensive designer watch, you will never have answers to these questions.

If you have a Casio CA53 W-1 calculator watch, you have answers. When people see you wearing this watch, they'll think "there's a man who is timeless" and "that's a man who is both professional and clever." You will not ask if your life has meaning, or if the watch fills that empty hole in your soul. You'll be too busy solving other people's problems. If life is meaningless, and numbers are meaningless, then life is numbers, and your watch is life.

5.0 out of 5 stars AUTHENTIC CASIO CALCULATOR WATCH

At first, I was a little skeptical as to whether or not this was an authentic Casio. But, upon careful inspection and comparison to its original counterpart, I can confirm this is an authentic Casio calculator watch! Unlike the original, it features a negative display. This could make it difficult to read in dimly lit environments, but it’s still a fun piece nonetheless. All the other features are exactly the same. However, the new blue watch doesn’t have some of the original texts and markings the old one has. (Which is what caused me to be skeptical of this one in the first place.) So if anyone is looking to pick any of these new color variations up for themselves, allow me encourage you. It’s AUTHENTIC, it’s fun, it’s a calculator watch!

Love the kitsch. These were still popular (for us nerds at least) when I was a kid, and 20 years later, I decided I wanted one again. Smart phones made both watches and mobile calculators obsolete, but frankly it's nice to just glance at your wrist to get the time instead of having to pull out your phone (esp. if you live someplace cold). These casios are great, too: I bought the illuminator a few years back to return to wristwatches, and it keeps time well, and probably will run another ten years no problem; cheap as heck too compared to an apple watch. So, worth it!

Only drawback: this one does NOT have a backlight. So it's hard to read sometimes. I usually wear the illuminator for my day to day / commuting watch, and save the calculator watch for fun days / a special look. There IS a casio backlit calculator watch called the databank or something, but it's pricier and, to me, doesn't look nearly as cool and compact. Maybe you'll like it though, don't miss out on account of me!

5.0 out of 5 stars To NATO Strap users: Beware!

The watch is exactly what I expected it to be. The same thing I used when I was a kid. 5 star.
Just know this thing has no backlight.
However, to anyone buying this based off the fact that user reviews show it on NATO bands: It is a seriously tight squeeze.
I bought this with the intention of putting it on a 18mm NATO band, so I was fiercely determined. But, I was pretty much convinced I was going to break the watch attempting to get it on, and am still pretty convinced it will eventually break considering the watch is plastic and the amount of force I had to use to get the pins in place.
I would reconsider if you are intending to use nato bands, or make sure you find the thinnest ones available. Also, be prepared to fight them on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Casio calculator watch- A blast from the past

So there are some lengthy reviews on this watch, so I’ll try to keep this one simple. To begin I haven’t had one of these since I was in 4th grade back in the late 70’s! Yes this watch goes back that far
The watch certainly seems smaller in comparison from my childhood but I had smaller wrists back then too. The watch is everything I remembered with the calculator function to the noisy little chirps from pressing of buttons.
Is this watch waterproof? Maybe in a rain storm but I wouldn’t go swimming with it. Watch comes with timer, stop watch, dual time zone- most of the stuff all modern watches have anyway. I gave the watch 4 stars on easy to read buttons as I’m a oldie so the writing is pretty small so I go mostly on remembrance.
Watch still has that retro plasticky smell and design as it did back in the day. Has the good ol time display we are all used to seeing if you had one in the past.
This is a retro design so please expect no backlight. Bummer right! Well some things are sometimes good enough not to change.
For anyone into a watch like this- I highly recommend.

I LOVE this watch. I get asked all the time if it's an Apple Watch. I laugh when people ask me this. I always tell them it's cooler than an Apple Watch. I don't really use the calculator feature that much. I mainly bought this watch for an old school look. I haven't taken it off once since I ordered it a few months back. The only SMALL complaint that I have is that it doesn't light up (back light feature that most watches have). I sometimes wake up in the middle of the night and I check my watch to see what time it is, but then I have to remind myself that my watch doesn't light up (lol). It's also hard to see the time on the watch if you're out and about during night time. First world problem though, am I right? You can always use your handy dandy phone to check the time when you have issues seeing the time on this watch. I receive a lot of compliments when I wear this watch. 10/10

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Calculator Watch

Best bang for your buck right here. As soon as I put this on I was transported back to 1985, and when I looked up I saw myself in the mirror and found myself to be wearing what seemed to be a life preserve while underneath there was a jean jacket and short sleeve button up. As soon as I got my bearings, I turned around and noticed a large white vehicle open up and reveal a smaller, silver, space looking vehicle which rolled out onto the street. Once the silver vehicle came to a stop, I noticed it looked even more like a spaceship than I though, and all of a sudden the doors swung open and crazy, maniacal older gentleman came out screaming about something called a Gigawatt. He seemed overly excited and pulled plutonium out of nowhere. Then, without warning, some dudes rolled through in a van and shot the old guy up. Standing there thinking, "WTF?!" I ran to the spaceship car, sped up to around 88 mph, and then all of a sudden transported back to 2019.

That's when I woke up, looked at my calculator watch and saw that I was late for work. It keeps great time.

I've always wanted a calculator watch. Now that I'm pushing 30, I felt that I'm an adult and I can do what I want and I want to buy a calculator watch, dammit. Yeah, I said it. You're not my mom. Deal with it.

It's great. It has dual time, a stopwatch, alarm, tells the date and day of the week, AND A FRIGGIN' CALCULATOR. If you wear it tightly enough, you can feel your pulse. So it's like an Apple Watch only it costs under $20, has a 3 year manufacturer's warranty, and the battery lasts five years. Doesn't send text messages, but you can write such words as 'BOOBS', 'BOOBIES', 'BOOBLESS', 'BEES', and 'SHOE'. So if you're a man of few words and your friend is right next to you, it's basically the same as iMessage.

Knocked off a star because the screen seems to lack some contrast. Not sure if it's permanent or the battery is low. Can't recharge the battery, so I don't know.

To avoid confusion, I use aftermarket silicone bands from Ritche, purely for the aesthetic and not because there was a problem with the ones included on the watch.

I've worn these style of Casio calculator watches for most of my life, and despite some shortcomings that I will detail below, I really do love them.

The first thing to wear out is usually the bands, especially if you bring your watch into the shower. My bands typically last about a year, give or take a few months. I do bring mine into the shower, loosening the bands to clean my wrists, and I believe the hot water and soaps cause the plastic bands to become hard and brittle over time. I'm going to continue doing it, because I suck at time management and an easily replaceable timepiece is invaluable to me. Some people replace the whole watch after the bands break, since they're so affordable. My grandfather would stick the old watch bodies in places with glue, Velcro, or adhesive pads. Handy to have a tiny calculator clock in all of your working spaces.

If you replace your bands, here's some information. These use standard 20mm pins and straps, though there is a bit of a protective lip overhanging each of the pins. Those lips may block thicker bands from fitting, so maybe reconsider if you plan to use a thick leather or metal band for some reason. The Ritche bands that I use have quick release pins for easy installation and removal, but it was actually quite a squeeze to get them in despite that. I imagine over time the protective lips will dig a permanent impression into the silicone, if the silicone doesn't just rot from the abuse I put it through.

These are water resistant, and I don't recall ever having an issue with water damage from taking it in the shower. My last one did stop responding to button presses unless I took the back plate off, which somehow was causing the C button (mode switch button) to stay permanently depressed. Never figured out the cause, but perhaps water damage, or perhaps the return spring was just gunked up with something that was dragging against the backplate.

They are not waterproof, "resistant" is the key phrase. My grandfather had one glued to his outdoor grill, and that one filled with condensation after a few years. I may be misremembering, but I thought these used to have a label marking them as water resistant up to a depth of 12 feet, but now they just say "water resistant". My interpretation of that is you're not meant to swim with it, but can still take it in the shower with no real risk of damage. I did swim with my first one that I believe had that label, and I don't remember any issue arising from it.

On to the features, of which there are a lot for such an affordable watch.

Right up front, these do not have any form of backlight. If you need to read it in the dark, then bring a light. While this dramatically extends battery life, I still consider it the most dramatic shortcoming of the family of Casio calculator watches that includes the Model 437, 438, and 3208.

The clock can be set to a 12 or 24 hour display, and also features a basic calendar. The day of the week is always displayed above the seconds counter, and the full date in Year-Month-Day configuration can be displayed by holding the ÷ button. Notably, the year counter is 2-digits; at the time of writing, the year is "20" for 2020, and next year it will display "21". Not only am I bad at time management, I can never remember the current date, so this is also invaluable to me. There's no fancy features with the calendar, no appointment reminders or anything to assign to a specific date, but still a much appreciated addition.

I also use the calculator frequently in daily life. It's got most of the features you would expect from a very basic calculator, but definitely isn't a replacement for something more advanced like a scientific or graphing calculator. Notably, there are no memory buttons to save a number for later, so you must use your own memory or make a note of any important numbers. Constant calculations are done by double pressing your function command, i.e. 8÷÷4. You will know you've set your number to a constant because a "K" will appear above your number around the top left of the display. To square a number, you double press X and look for the same "K", then press =, i.e 3×× =9, then you can hit = again to go up another power, from 3² to 3³ and so on. Not necessarily the most intuitive, but I figured it out as a kid without reading the instructions

The calculator face is 8 digits, or 7 when dealing with negatives. Decimals are supported.

The alarm works fine, not much to say about it, loud enough to hear but not too loud. As soon as you get the watch, you can test the alarm sound by holding 0 and + while on the alarm screen. I started silencing my alarm in my sleep, so I only use it for reminders and not for waking up. You can enable and disable your alarm by pressing the 4 button when you're on the main clock screen or on the alarm screen. You only get one alarm, so you can't have a bunch all set up to go off at different times at different days. You can enable in the Clock screen or in the alarm screen a single beep to go off once every hour on the hour by hitting the × button. The single hourly beeps that Signal mode provides are not particularly disruptive, but can be helpful for keeping track of time, and that's the closest you get to having individual programmable alarms for reminders.

The Dual Time mode is a nifty feature, allowing you to keep track of a separate time somewhere else on the globe. The minutes must be configured manually, as not all timezones are running on the same minute, but the seconds counter is automatically copied from the time you've assigned to the main clock, and can only be changed from the main clock. The DT clock uses the same time format as your main one, so you can't set one to 12h and one to 24h.

The stop watch may have more features than you'd expect. I personally don't use it often, but the manual for the model 3208 is on Casio's website and will tell you everything you need to know. Notably though , the stop watch is limited to 23h, 59m, 59.99s. A second note, a single beep occurs every 10 minutes that the stop watch is running.

One often overlooked feature that I feel I must bring up is the battery saver, which disables the beep which normally happens with ever key press. I enabled it because I don't like making a lot of noise; not to say the beep is loud, but it is a noise. You enable battery saver by going to your calculator screen and hitting the "B" button, which is the recessed button underneath the mode switching "C" button. This doesn't disable other sounds, like the alarm, hourly signal, or any sounds from the stop watch.

That's my review of the features, now a few additional notes.

Aside from the color options, there seems to be one major difference with these models over the more classic pure black model, and that difference is the display. I can see why many of the reviews complain that the display on this specific model is hard to read, though I don't have much trouble with it after getting used to it. Unlike older models, this display is inverted; the background is black and the characters are the kind of greenish-grey that would normally be in the background. Aesthetically, this change is interesting, but I find it slightly harder to reach under harsh glare, and observe no difference in legibility in average or low light environments. As stated in the beginning, there is no backlight, so none of these style calculator watches are good for low light. I am curious how this inverted color display effects battery life, as I was under the impression that in these kinds of displays the black portion required power and the grey-green section was unpowered. Perhaps I've got that backwards, or perhaps power is only required in the operation of shifting between light and dark.

Casio does have other models of calculator watches that have backlights, but they're more expensive and may not be as ruggedly designed to survive abuse; I've never owned one, so no comment.

I've known people to struggle with the buttons on the face of the watch, as they are very small and give no real tactile feedback. Just little rubber membrane nubs pushing through a plastic grate basically, with no room in the watch to fit some kind of clicky mechanism. I've gotten used to the tiny rubber "Chiclet" keys, even with the button-press sound disabled. I find it works best for me to think of it as pressing the buttons with the bone of your fingertip, and not think about all the flesh around it. The keys are stiff enough that your skin will usually just squish around the buttons you're not trying to press, and only the one in the middle where your finger bone is gets pressed. I will say, that strategy may not work if you have heavy calluses on your fingers, in which case you can use your fingernails. Haven't found fingernails to do much damage to the rubber keys, just the occasional scrape but no deep cuts; think the rubber is flexible enough to fold inside the watch face before you put enough pressure on to actually cut it with your fingernails.

The "B" button is recessed, as I mentioned before. I don't find it too hard to press with even a well trimmed thumbnail, but some seem to struggle with that one too.

The display is under a somewhat thick layer of plastic, not glass. It's a little bit hard, but can definitely still scratch. I wear my watch on the inside of my wrist, and because of that I think I haven't bumped the watch face into things that often, so no deep scratches and just a few light ones that really only get picked up by camera flash.

I've been wearing my new one for only about a month and a half, but it's similar enough to the ones I'm used to that I feel confident in giving such a detailed review.

If you're the kind of person who made it all the way to the end of my ridiculously long review for a budget-oriented watch, then you may be the kind of person who would enjoy wearing this watch. If the color is unimportant though, I may recommend the more standard black model without the inverted color display, just because this one is at the very least slightly more difficult to read sometimes.

I've warn the original black version for 24 years strait (see tan line and watch print picture for proof! haha). I was excited to see the white version when it was time to buy a new one (because the bands only last 2-3 years (SEE UPDATE BELOW), and the bands are more expensive than the new watch). However I could not see the white on black display in low light or bright light, making it only usable in medium light.

So, I opened the watch and inserted the guts of one of my old black-on-white text versions, and now I have a white case and band with a readable face. Very easy to switch out the clock-works. You don't even need to take the battery out!

So, it's a 5 star watch, minus a star for the fun, but ultimately unusable watch display.

So, if you read this Casio, I love this watch, but would love it more if you could make the band more sturdy. It always ends up cracking right where the clasp is set (I always wear it in the same place).

Also, I'd love a red version!

UPDATE 7/11/2020:
I have had new white watch for a little while now. The watch band seems like they've improved it over the black band (maybe they've made the same change to the black one now, I don't know). The new band feels more mat (less glossy) and a bit stiffer, and less rubbery. This seems like it will hold up better and hopefully won't crack as easily. I'm happy to see it seems they have tried to address the problem. I'll update this review as time goes on.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's a great watch, but it's held back by nostalgia.
Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2019
Color: greyVerified Purchase
I didn't get this watch out of nostalgia for the 80's. I got this watch because it was cheap, and the product description said it could run a stopwatch for over an hour, which was a feature I needed.
The watch's build quality if fantastic. The LCD screen is extremely easy to read during the day, inside or outside. The alarm is loud and obnoxious, so there's no little chance of you missing it. Most of the modes have a little bonus that makes them better than you'd expect. (for example, while in the normal time mode, you can press a button to see the current date.) If it were still the 1980's, I'd have been very impressed by this watch.

It's not the 80's any more, and I'm really giving this product 4 stars because I'm impressed that it wasn't a low quality ripoff. While the build quality still impresses me months later, there are a few quality of life things that I'd like to see added.
You can't set a countdown timer. Sure, you can set an alarm so that the watch starts beeping at 7:00 pm, but you can't set a timer to make the watch start beeping "in five minutes."
You can't hold down a button to temporarily show the 24-hour time. For context, if you hold down the division key, the watch will show the current date until you release that key.
You can't make the regular clock display AM/PM and have the dual time display Military Time. They must both display AM/PM or both display Military Time.
The watch face cannot illuminate for nighttime (or movie theater) use. You might think this isn't a big deal in the age of smartphones, but it's still a big deal.
It's really hard to tell what the math symbols are. The calculator button numbers use a glittery, highly visible silver paint, and the alternate key functions use a pretty great yellow-gold paint. The math functions (add, subtract, multiply, divide, equals) use a deep, dark red. It's almost brown, and it's almost completely invisible. It's nearly impossible to tell the difference between the addition and division symbols. In dim lighting conditions, I'd be hard pressed to tell you that the subtraction symbol was even there. The math functions could easily be silver, just like the number pad.

This watch feel like it's exactly the same as the first one that ever came off the production line. This is great in that the quality is very high, but I think this is holding it back more than anything. It could do with the minor changes I listed above, and this would not hurt the nostalgia factor. It would, very simply, make it a better vintage watch.

The more I wear this watch the more I fall in love with it 100%. Short and simple I would buy it again in a heartbeat and I recommend it to anyone interested. But if you want to know a few things before you buy it here you go... When I first got it the package came damaged but the watch was fine, and when I first put it on I thought it was way too small and that’s true it’s a smaller watch but it’s true to the 90’s style. Big watches is a newer fad and looking at it in the mirror and in pictures it’s not as bad as I thought but it’s something to keep in mind. The water resistance is crazy but I have ran it across the water faucet a few times from cooking and it’s fine but I wouldn’t take it swimming. The calculator Buttons isn’t the best and next to them there’s tiny scratches that you can see under certain lighting. But needless to say I still love this watch and can’t see me not having one in my collection so if it interest you any I highly recommend it.

Pros: it’s cheap but good quality, it’s a 90s icon from Marty McFly to that one kid in your school, the band is comfortable, the watch is thin and light but Cheap feel, it’s just a extremely comfortable watch, and it’s decently accurate on keeping time.

Cons: the crystal are prone to scratches, the buttons aren’t the best, and the water resistance isn’t the best, it might be too small for some people.

An alarm... that I tested and it actually woke me up. Surprisingly the buttons are not hard to press, while running the calculator I have not yet hit a wrong button. 12h/24h time format option. And its not bulky

4 stars and this is why not 5.

#1 It needs a back light
#2 The strap could be a little bigger/better
#3 It should come with a stick to help fight off all the ladies that will want you to buy them things because they think you are rich.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun retro style + practical functionality
Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2021

I first bought this for a Halloween costume and ended up making it my everyday watch. My style leans a bit 80s, and the Casio's classic look goes perfectly with vintage pieces, but makes any outfit fun. And it doesn't look comically bulky on my comically dainty wrist.

I prefer the comfort and the style of a black sports watch, and I'm not exactly the most graceful or coordinated human, so the price and practicality suit me as well. Changing the time is a breeze with the full number pad, so no need to dig up the manual twice a year. And yes, I do use the calculator when my phone's not handy! The only reason for docking one star is that somehow there's no backlight function.

This watch has withstood 3+ years of everyday klutzy wear and tear, as well as the mess and water exposure of many a bar shift. No scuffs, no torn buttons, no faded functions, and the battery has yet to need changing. (I did have to replace the whole watch once, but only because it fell outta my bag and under my tire...crunch. Even then, the display was still trying its best.)

I get so many compliments on this neat little Casio that I'm a bit loath to make the switch to a smart watch I just got as a free promo. Might have to do a throwback to the Swatch look and just stack them up.

The watch functions well and has useful functions and the manual is concise. The styling is great. The buttons while small, are surprisingly able to 'interpret' your intent - it's hard to mis-punch a button. Battery life is 5 years. Warranty is 1 year but is essentially useless because it doesn't cover anything besides the circuit board inside the watch.

Cons: the black background looks super cool but if you don't have sharp eyes you are going to have a hard time reading the display. There's also no backlight which means, in conjunction with the already hard to read display you will not be reading this watch at night. I think the lack of a backlight is a big design oversight especially with the dark background, but other than that the watch is very well thought out and is very good value for the money.

I had a calculator watch that I bought back in the day when they were the new thing. Saved my allowance for a while to get it. Fast forward 25 years plus; I came accross watch recently and started wearing it again. Before long, the band broke. When I took it to the watch repair store, I was told they couldn’t (more like they were too fancy to deal with) fix it. So I thought I would get another on eBay. To my surprise, I’m able to get this on amazon for under $20. So this became my disposable watch. It’s really reliable, stylish and is a great conversation starter. The best thing about it is if I misplace or break it, I can easily replace it without feeling guilt because of the cost. And if a lost watch resurfaces, it doesn’t hurt to have multiples. I will say that this new version is way flimsy. It doesn’t seem to be a problem as the watch is still pretty durable.

I do wish they put in a simple back light so we could see the time in the dark, but somehow they didn’t do that. So-minus one star.
Overall it’s just a plastic watch which help you keep track of time without having to pull out your phone every time you wonder what Time is it. It’s a fun and inexpensive watch -which you don’t have to worry about damaging and Beside, who wouldn’t like to go Back to the Future with Marty mcfly.

This is very similar to the watch I had as a teenager back in the 80s.

The good: (1) Easy to use buttons for all functions (2) I use the calculator & stopwatch frequently and those fit my needs, (3) water resistance has been effective for every normal outdoor use (e.g. even heavy rain), (4) numerals are clear (5) watch face includes hour, minute, seconds & day of the week

The bad: (1) the watch-strap does not last very long & is very hard to replace. The timepiece battery lasts for years longer than the strap which will rips around the adjustment holes within a year of use; (2) I'd prefer if the watch face would include the date, with this watch I need to hold down a button to see the date; (3) the accuracy of the clock degrades over time; within a year, it becomes faster by 1-3 minutes

Made iconic by Back to the Future's Marty McFly, The Police's Sting, and Breaking Bad's Walter White, wearing this watch puts you in good company.

The watch is one of the original smartwatches capable of doing basic math equations in addition to having an alarm, dual time, and stop watch features. The watch also claims to be water resistant, though I personally have not tested this yet. Since it is just plastic and has twelve rubber buttons on the face, I'd recommend not swimming with it.

I got this mainly because (1) I wanted something small and different, and (2) I was tired of my Apple Watch Series 3 dying on me in the middle of the day. With it being so cheap, I don't have to worry about breaking or scratching it like a pricey smartwatch.

The watch is incredibly thin and light-weight. I often forget I'm wearing it. The one silver button sticking out on the right side changes the function from watch to calculator. I was worried it would be hit by accident frequently but I have yet to have that issue.

I was also concerned the watch would look oversized on my narrow wrist, but I'm satisfied.

The watch seems fashion versatile too. Can definitely wear this with jeans and a t-shirt or in a polo and khakis. You could probably wear with a suit, though that may matter more on the occasion and your occupation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Value Product
Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2020
Color: greyVerified Purchase
SUMMARY:
This watch, while "vintage," really stands up to today's standards, especially for the price. Please read on if you are serious about purchasing this watch. I go into detail about this watch for your benefit!

THE BAD STUFF FIRST:
The largest and most unfortunate downside is the lack of a backlight, rendering it completely useless in dim situations such as in a vehicle with no interior lights at night, or when grabbing a quick snack at night without the lights on.

While some believe this is an excellent beginner's watch, some beginners may be confused by the abbreviated notes with arrows pointing to the numbers which correspond to each feature on a certain mode. They may be confused on what these abbreviations mean, and for what mode these notes correspond to.

The calculator is a standard calculator, not a scientific one. You will have to think about PEMDAS all the time when performing calculations.

Calculator does not appear to have "negate displayed number" functionality.

Buttons may be difficult to press, especially as a beginner and result in slower-than-expected calculations.

Watch is smaller than you might think. It's not ridiculously small, but it's... small. Ah what the hell, it's all relative anyway. It fits well and won't look small on your wrist though.

Feels cheap upon first use... but it is cheap... so deal with it!

THE GOOD STUFF FOR LAST:
Great value! Good looking convenient calculator watch for just $20! Where else can you find a deal like THAT?

Convenient calculator for performing basic and sometimes complex calculations. Always helpful to have a calculator on your wrist so you don't have to pull out your phone all the time to do basic addition and multiplication. Just remember though that your phone calculator may be a scientific calculator while this watch has a standard calculator. Keep PEMDAS in mind!

Time mode has all the information you need. The watch fortunately also has the ability to display 24 hour time. Furthermore, watch has dual time so you can keep track of another time zone. You don't want to call your friend in New York at some odd hour if you live in California.

This watch has an hourly signal as well as an alarm.

Durable. Water resistant. Can withstand hand washing. For maximum time of use and and best appearance, it is not recommended you shower with it or expose it to soap.

Has all the functions you need in day to day life.

I bought this watch for a friend who, as it turns out, wanted it for nostalgia purposes. He has no interest in actually using the watch as a calculator. He just wanted a calculator watch that looked '80'ish! So he loves this thing.

I however thought the watch was significantly smaller than it looked in the photos. This thing is so small only a garden gnome has fingers small enough to actually use the calculator keys. I assume real world people would have to use a stylus or ink pen.

So If you are looking for a calculator watch you can actually use, look elsewhere 0for the bigger models. But If you just want to look like a 1980's geek like my best friend does, then this watch is the watch for you!

4.0 out of 5 stars Best Watch Ever
Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2021

It's been about a year since I got this watch, and as it is still one of the best purchases I have ever made, I decided to leave a review. I seriously cannot recommend this watch enough. My family has actually called me a "walking Casio advertisement" because of how often I bring up how great this thing is. For $20, you get watch that tells date and time (AM/PM or 24 hour), has an alarm (just one, but that ain't bad), a second timezone, a stopwatch, and a calculator. And it's water resistant. I haven't tested the extent of the water resistance, but mine's done fine in a little bit of rain. There are a couple things to be aware of, but overall, this thing is the best.

The biggest con is that the screen doesn't light up, so if you're in the dark, it's kinda useless. If it had a light, this thing would basically be flawless. The other downside is that the frequently-used buttons will get a little less sensitive with time, so you have to press a little harder for it to register. That said, all the buttons on mine still work--a couple just require slightly more pressure than the others.

That's really it for gripes though, and both are minor for me. If you're in the market for a new watch, this one is worth the price. I use the calculator at least 3 times a week and I love the retro look it has. You will too.

P.S. If you ever have trouble getting a certain function on yours to work, hit up YouTube, as there are a ton of videos there to help turn on or off the beeps, switch from 24 hour time to AM/PM or vice versa, or any other problem you may be having.

This is a great, simple watch. Only a couple minutes to familiarize myself and set the time and it's been on my wrist ever since.

Like a lot of folks I wind up checking my phone an inordinate amount of time just to see the time and maybe use the calculator. Why not save myself a step and save my phone's battery the precious screen-on time by offloading those tasks to a really really comfortable watch?

As others have mentioned the band is super comfortable. it has a lot more flex than the G-shock watches I liked to wear, but it's not a "heavy duty' watch (though it feels pretty tough and is at least water resistant for a quick splash.) The watch is also so low profile that it easily slides underneath sleeves. It's all black, so it goes with everything. It's also a digital watch so it clashes with just about everything too. But whatever, be a little eccentric for once.

The only things I have to acknowledge that could (possibly) be improved is that the buttons are a little difficult to press (though not too hard, I think i'll get used to the numbers being the left of the corresponding button) and that I would trade the "dual time" feature for a countdown timer. I think for anyone who has issues adding or subtracting timezones and using the calculator and a little brain power.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than most 4-function calculators, but it's hard to set the alarm.
Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2015
Color: greyVerified Purchase
This watch has one flaw, which is that the button to set the time, and, in particular, to set the alarm time, is recessed. This makes it too difficult to press -- you have to use your fingernail, and you need to use a part of the nail with a very small radius of curvature.

Its ability to calculate is surprisingly well-thought-out for a four-function calculator -- if you've got a number x, you can compute x / 5 by pressing DIVIDE 5 =, of course. But you can also compute 5 / x by pressing DIVIDE DIVIDE 5 =. You can compute integral powers relatively efficiently, for example, to cube a number, press TIMES TIMES = =. (Pressing an operator twice puts the calculator in "calculate by a constant" mode, where the constant is the existing value N, in which pressing '=' adds, subtracts, multiplies, or divides by N. For example, if you wanted to convert a bunch of measurements, 5, 6, and 7.5 inches, to centimeters, you could type 2.54 TIMES TIMES 5 = (look at the value) 6 = (look at the value) 7 = (look at the value).)

It also doesn't have a backlight, and that was more annoying than I expected, but I knew this when purchasing.

Despite being bad for setting the alarm, the watch was comfortable to wear, as it did successfully maintain a one-to-one correspondence with the location of my wrist, and it came in packaging appropriate for a "grand unveiling," and in particular, the minimalist aesthetic and price kept my standards low, which is why it deserves 4 out of 5 stars.

Pros: lightweight, calculator (obviously), stop watch, dual time, colored band, and black backlighting.

Cons: Feels somewhat of a flimsy material in which the original black watch didn't have.
The black backlighting at certain angles doesn't allow me to see the time... Which bring me to the hardest point...There isn't any light or way for time to be illuminated when it's dark so it limits when I can wear it.

Realistically it's a very affordable watch and had a good amount of usages. The design and color is great but the lack of some functions bright the score down.

It's good at what it is, a retro toy, but needs some simple changes to be usable as a functional watch. I like how it's a bit simpler, has better buttons, and is smaller in size when compared to the other more complex databank I bought for 10 dollars more. Now for the negatives: Why does it only has the day of the week with the time on the main display? I'd prefer the date with or without the month number to be on the main time display. Having to push a button to see the date requires the use of a second hand. That defeats half the reason I wear a watch: to remind me of the date with a quick glance. Why add the step? Even my dirt cheap Casio F91w has the most basic of dates and days of the week on the main screen. Casio could have put a number for the day date on the top middle on the main screen without much effort, it seems. My second complaint is it doesn't have a mute ability. I don't want to hear a beep every time I push a button. I usually mute them ASAP, but this one doesn't have the ability. Why? It doesn't have any light for nighttime use. It's dark where I live 16 hours a day right now, making this watch useless outside a majority of the time. Finally, the band feels cheaper than the other Casios I've purchased. I wouldn't trust it to hold up to much abuse at all. It's a shame because I really want to make it my everyday watch. As is it's relegated to the drawer to pull out now and then for fun

It's a nice looking retro modern watch. I remember being a kid and thinking how cool a calculator watch would be. Smart watches of that era. I totally found this on accident while browsing for another watch and with it's affordable pricing, I thought it would be cool enough to buy with little risk. It definitely has the retro modern looks, classic Casio calculator with modern color way. Sitting on your wrist it is quite the little fashuonable time piece.
Unfortunately both of those things also contribute to its weaknesses. The retro means it has a small digital screen, which would be ok except to modernize it they also made it a negative display. And not exactly a high quality negative display (which probably contributes to great pricing). This makes the screen a little harder to read at quick glance then I expected. I have other negative display digital watches and rarely struggle with them granted they usually have bigger displays, likewise I have smaller regular digital displays which are easy to read. Don't get me wrong you can read the time with even below average lighting but it's rarely a quick glance thing...it's a look at the time and sometimes get the right lighting angle. Which comes to the second negative I wasn't expecting which was no light? If you are updating this watch and willing to add that negative display, you can't add a light function? If this had Casio EL it would totally negate the negative display issue, if at the cost of battery life and a slightly higher price. But I think it would be worth it and make the watch much better and still an easy sales pitch. The rest of the watch is as expected, buttons are small just like the original but responsive. It does look cool.

Bottom line if you're looking for a cool looking retro but modern wrist wear. It's totally worth the price. If you're looking for an easy and cheap time teller with some added nerdy functionality, Casio can still help you just not with this watch.

3.0 out of 5 stars cool inexpensive watch with one very major flaw
Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2021

I bought this is a joke, it was under $20, so it is a good value, and pretty cool, all my friends in their 40s are digging it. That said, I am very happy! Here comes the bad news, if you are looking for a practical watch, this is probably not it. It has one major flaw! The screen is not back lit nor is there a light to be turned on. In other words, you will not be able to tell time in any low light conditions. At first I thought mine was bad and that the display backlight was out. But no, they are all like that. You won't be able to tell time in any conditions but the well lit ones.

3.0 out of 5 stars a little disappointed, but...

Needless to say this watch is the coolest, and incredibly nostalgic for anyone who's interested in Casio digital wristwatches... I was about to start a replacement process because after spending more time than I had expected reading the manual thoroughly, I saw there's NO back light!

The thing is, I went over the products page and it is true, it does NOT say anywhere that it had back light, however... look at the picture, the very first on on the product's page (the one I'm posting) and tell me if this picture doesn't give you the absolute idea that you'll begetting a watch with some sort of back light.

I mean... seriously, it looks like false advertising almost -- I dare ANYONE to take a picture of this watch and have the screen coming up bright like in the Amazon picture! Come on, there must be some serious Photoshop there, either to make the product more appealing or... I honestly don't know, but I feel quite disappointed, and I was so psyched about it. No I don't even really feel like wearing it.

I wonder why Amazon did that (or allowed it), quite a low blow!

3.0 out of 5 stars I want to like this watch

For the money, this is a really neat little watch - looks a lot like the originals. But for some reason, Casio chose to use a black LCD screen with light digits rather than a traditional light colored screen with dark digits. It is really hard to read this watch. My 8 year old son likes it - and can probably see it better than I can.

Thought Id try this, saw it on a guy’s wrist. Calculator, not a “data” watch. Display is waaay small, looks bigger in product photo (?) and the display is dark background with light (small) numbers, making it harder to read. Keypad letters/numbers hard to read also. May send it back, may just leave it at office as back up.

I'm a math teacher. Thought this would be fun. I do like it.

Pros: It's small and I was pleasantly surprised that it fit my wrist. It should not be advertised as a man's watch. Make sure to check the dimensions. Great if you're a child or female. Awesome design. Love the nostalgia.

Cons: difficult instructions. Must be able to read things carefully. Buttons are extremely small. I have tiny fingers and I struggle to push the buttons correctly. Beware if you have large fingers.

Overal, good for me. Needs some improvements.

3.0 out of 5 stars Seems to work fine, no light, kind of small
Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2013
Color: greyVerified Purchase
I guess I got the measurements wrong with this item, but when it came in, it was pretty dingy. The watch face is really small, there is no light option, and reset bottom seems like it's falling off when trying to hold down. Overall the concept is cool, I like the retro 1980's kick back to the watch, the calculator seems easy to use, just keep in mind the buttons are pretty small, but considering the watch/calculator combo, it's not bad.

Pros
--------
Seems durable, but pretty small, and looks a little "girly" on a bigger dude like me
Calculator is a nice option, especially being in the medical field

Cons
---------
No light that I can find
reset button is not durable
very flimsy and small

2.0 out of 5 stars Classic watch, but go for the black option
Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2020

I had a black calculator watch like this for years. I probably never once used the calculator, but the retro look and general ease of use made it a fine watch. And for $20? Excellent value. I was thrilled to see other color options, so I ordered the beige one.

Overall, I love the look of the beige one, and would likely love the look of the blue one as well. However, the beige and blue models have a reversed LCD where the numbers are light grey on a black background. It looks cool in pictures, but you'll only ever be able to read the time if you're in direct light looking at it.

Considering it's winter and the sun starts setting around 4pm, that meant about half the day I cannot read the time at all (and I have perfect vision). So now I have a cool looking watch that sits on my nightstand, no longer used. I considered just wearing it like some kind of jewelry, but if I can't tell the time on it, I don't see much point.

I returned the watch.

2.0 out of 5 stars Much too difficult to read
Reviewed in the United States on September 8, 2020

I lost my original Casio calculator watch, and this was a lower cost version, so I tried it. The display worked OK only if it was in direct strong light. With a little lower light, I could see the time only if I held the watch at a specific angle to the light source. AT night in a room lighted only by a light bulb, I could not see the time at all. Too much frustration for me. I returned this lower priced model, and bought the original instead. It has a white background with black numbers that is easy to see in any light.

2.0 out of 5 stars Daily wear, I may buy a 2nd as backup "just in case."

I've worn this more than daily (in sleep) for about 3 months and love it. It takes daily wear as a baker/pasta chef very well, with flour dusting and water splashes and starter goop and all. Things wipe right off the plastic even after dry and I don't press buttons if it's been splashed recently. Calculator is used daily and still works fine. Buttons are very easy to press if you just push them like you'd push a "D-pad" as "down."

//Edit: Removing 3 stars: it *was* great, until the "Set" button stopped responding like 6mos later. Havent been able to change my alarm time or re-sync the time in ages. So cheap I may as well just buy another, should've got that backup after all.

I have to twist my wrist to catch the light so I can read the display. There is no light. As much as I love Casio, I would not buy this particular watch again because of these two things.

OK if all you want is an old retro look but if you want a trust worthy watch look elsewhere.

Overall it's a neat little watch for doing quick calcs. The screen needs a major overhaul though. The numbers do not show up very well and are very difficult to read at times depending on ambient light. I think if they brightened up the numbers or changed the background it would make it 100 times better.

great watch. After I got it though, the price dropped $10 it would’ve been nice if I’d gotten the money back.

Title says it all. The 8 didn't work, so just to set it, I had to wait until a time and date with no 8's in it. This renders the calculator useless, pretty much. It looks great, but just one button that doesn't work wrecks the whole thing.

I have been buying this watch for years, I use it at work. I have been buying the black one since 1992. Its easy to read, and easy to wipe down with alcohol and keep clean. This time I got the navy which looked nice in the photo, bright white easy to read numbers. WRONG. I got this watch and cannot read the numbers. The background is black so of course the numbers should be bright white and easy to read. In the photo on Amazon they appear bright white. They are not! I can barely see them. Went to the store and got a new battery the same day this arrived. No change. I am so disappointed. It shouldn't be that difficult to make a watch that is easy to read. I am giving it one star. Because if you cannot read it, the thing is useless. My husband had to watch a VIDEO to even change the battery. Because apparently thats not even idiot proof anymore. And which made no difference at all.

1.0 out of 5 stars Was not easy to read due to screen issues

I have used a Casio Calculator Wrist Watch for a long time now. I absolutely love my current watch, but it’s starting to show its age and use, so I decided to order a new one. My favorite colour is green, so you can imagine my excitement when I found this piece. I got my new green watch in and opened the box. This is when the issue happened. Upon inspecting the watch face, the background colour was entirely too dark. The lighter coloured numbers didn’t stand out very well, and they were very difficult to read at any angle. I’m not sure if this was a battery issue, a problem with the lcd screen during production, but it wasn’t worth paying to fix a brand new watch. I didn’t bother ordering a new one mainly because it was a big deal with Amazon to get it returned and took a little over a couple weeks to get the refund to my Amazon account balance despite mailing back same day as receiving it.

who makes a digital watch without a light?! come on Casio, you've done this long enough to test the product and know that the display is difficult to read in shade, darkness or even bright sunlight.

love the look. returned it because what good is a watch you can't read.

ps - Casio, you're in a dwindling category with digital watches when most people use their phone or a healthy watch/i-watch.

1.0 out of 5 stars Writing Too Small
Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2019

I had high hopes, but I can't even read the writing on the watch. It's just too small, and I have perfect vision. It's a watch for a little girl or a small-wristed woman, not a man. I put this o and instantly thought I was 10 years old...in the 80's.

The 80's called...they want their watch back. Casio needs to get with the program and build a bigger watch that people can actually read and use. There's NO WAY that you'll be able to use the calculator. No way. The buttons are just too small.

It's much much smaller than in the pictures.

This a very cheap brittle lightweight non-illuminating calculator. The watch part can’t be set so I am hesitant to use the word “watch”. You can watch it not light up in the dark or watch it give the time for a time zone you are not in; this was a mistake purchase and because of the cost to labor ration I’m probably not going to return it. I’m going to give it to my buddies blind daughter.

Unfortunately, the watch arrived with number buttons that did not function when pressed, making it impossible to set. It was an Amazon Warehouse buy, so the return was, for the most part, easy. But it would have been unnecessary if the watch had been properly checked before being re-sold.

However, that is the chance you take when buying a returned item.
